Is This Normal? Finder · Poop and pee

My puppy has soft poop. Should I worry?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

One soft stool in a bright, playful puppy is common, usually from a food change, too many treats or the stress of a new home. What matters most is the puppy, not the poop. Diarrhea with a tired, flat puppy, especially one who isn't done with his shots, can't wait.

Why it happens

A puppy's gut is still getting used to everything, and new food, extra treats, stress and worms all show up in the poop first. Puppies also dry out faster than grown dogs, so the clock runs shorter.

When to call

Tick what fits and see which door you're at.

Tick anything you're seeing

Your door: WATCHWATCH

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

What helps

  • No human stomach or anti-diarrhea medicines unless your vet says so
  • Never skip meals on a toy or very young puppy
  • Take a photo and bag a fresh sample before you call

GO NOW means: Head to your vet, if they're open and can see him right away, or to the nearest emergency clinic. Call on the way so they're ready for you.

Not sure which door you're at? That's a call. Call your vet.

Worried right now? Check the Three Doors list, from most urgent down, and stop at the first door that fits.
