Is This Normal? Finder · Poop and pee

My house-trained puppy started having accidents. Why?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

Accidents are normal for weeks while a puppy learns. But a puppy who was doing well and suddenly starts having accidents may have a bladder infection, which makes him need to go urgently and often. See your vet before you blame the training.

Why it happens

When peeing burns or feels urgent, a puppy can't hold it, however well he's learned. That's why a sudden slip is a vet question before it's a training one.

Which door?

When to call

Tick what fits and see which door you're at.

Tick anything you're seeing

Your door: WATCHWATCH

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

What helps

  • Clean accidents with an enzyme cleaner so the spot stops smelling like a bathroom
  • Never rub his nose in it

Not sure which door you're at? That's a call. Call your vet.

Worried right now? Check the Three Doors list, from most urgent down, and stop at the first door that fits.
