Is This Normal? Finder · Sleep and energy

My puppy gets the zoomies every evening. Is that normal?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

Totally normal. Zoomies are sudden bursts of wild running, often in the evening or after a bath, and they're just energy coming out. Keep him off slippery floors and away from the stairs while he does his laps.

Why it happens

Puppies bank energy all day and spend it in one burst. Evenings, baths and the moment after a long nap are classic launch times.

Usually normal

  • Wild laps around the couch, then a crash nap

When to call

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

What helps

  • If evenings turn bitey and frantic, he may need a nap more than more play
