Is This Normal? Finder · Sleep and energy

My puppy won't settle at night. Is that normal?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

Very normal in the first week or two. He's in a new place without his littermates, and he may be cold, overtired or need to pee. Most puppies settle a lot within a couple of weeks once bedtime looks the same every night.

Why it happens

Until last week he slept in a warm pile of littermates that smelled exactly like him. A quiet room on his own is a big change, and a small bladder doesn't help.

Which door?

  • WATCHVery common in the first weeks home.

Usually normal

  • Fussing the first few nights, then settling once he's been out and has you nearby
  • Waking once or twice for a potty trip

When to call

Tick what fits and see which door you're at.

Tick anything you're seeing

Your door: WATCHWATCH

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

What helps

  • Crate or pen right next to your bed at first
  • A calm potty trip last thing before bed
  • Overnight trips short, dark and boring

Under 16 weeks, a toy breed, or not done with his shots? Move everything one door closer to GO NOW.

GO NOW means: Head to your vet, if they're open and can see him right away, or to the nearest emergency clinic. Call on the way so they're ready for you.

Not sure which door you're at? That's a call. Call your vet.

Worried right now? Check the Three Doors list, from most urgent down, and stop at the first door that fits.
