Is This Normal? Finder · Sleep and energy

My puppy is suddenly really tired. Should I worry?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

A wiped-out puppy after a busy day, or a sleepy day after shots, is common and usually passes within a day. The question is whether he perks up. If he's still flat the next day, or he's tired and also sick to his stomach or off his food, don't wait it out.

Why it happens

Puppies run on smaller reserves than grown dogs. A big day empties the tank fast, and so does a vaccine, which asks the immune system to do some work for a day or so.

Which door?

  • WATCHAfter a big day, or the day after shots.
  • CALL TODAYIt lasts.
  • GO NOWHe's also vomiting, has diarrhea or won't eat.

Usually normal

  • Sleeps hard after a big outing and wakes up bright
  • Sleepy and a little sore for a day after vaccines

When to call

Tick what fits and see which door you're at.

Tick anything you're seeing

Your door: WATCHWATCH

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

Under 16 weeks, a toy breed, or not done with his shots? Move everything one door closer to GO NOW.

GO NOW means: Head to your vet, if they're open and can see him right away, or to the nearest emergency clinic. Call on the way so they're ready for you.

Not sure which door you're at? That's a call. Call your vet.

Worried right now? Check the Three Doors list, from most urgent down, and stop at the first door that fits.
