Is This Normal? Finder · Behavior

My puppy is suddenly scared of things. Is that normal?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

Short spooky phases are common in puppies, and they don't follow a set calendar. Don't drag him up to the scary thing. Back off to where he can look at it and still take a treat, keep it upbeat, and try again another day. Handled gently, most phases fade.

Why it happens

A growing brain goes through stretches where new or odd things feel bigger. Forcing the issue tends to stamp the fear in, while distance and treats help it pass.
