Is This Normal? Finder · Behavior

My puppy cries in his crate. Is that normal?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

Very normal in the first nights. He's lonely, in a new place, maybe cold or needing to pee, and he's never slept alone before. It usually gets much better within a week or two. Never punish the crying, because it only teaches him that nighttime is scary too.

Why it happens

Crying is how a lonely puppy calls the litter back. It fades as he learns your house is safe and that you always come back.

Which door?

  • WATCHVery common in the first nights.

When to call

Tick what fits and see which door you're at.

Tick anything you're seeing

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

What helps

  • Crate next to your bed at first
  • Warm bedding and a T-shirt that smells like you
  • Short, dark, boring overnight potty trips
