Is This Normal? Finder · Mouth and teeth
I found my puppy's tooth on the floor. Is that normal?
By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM
The short answer
Yes. Puppies have 28 baby teeth, and they start falling out around 4 months, front teeth first, then the canines by about 6 months. Most have all 42 adult teeth by about 6 to 8 months. Plenty of baby teeth get swallowed, which is harmless.
Why it happens
Each adult tooth pushes its baby tooth out on the way in. Front teeth go first, then the long canines, and the big chewing teeth fill in at the back.
Which door?
WATCHBaby teeth fall out from about 4 months, front teeth first.
Usually normal
- A tiny tooth on the floor, or none at all because he swallowed it
- A spot of blood on a chew toy
- Mild redness where a new tooth is coming in
