Is This Normal? Finder · Eating and drinking

My puppy eats poop. Is that normal?

By Dr. Steve Pelton, DVM

The short answer

It's gross, but it's very common in puppies, and most grow out of it. It isn't dangerous on its own, but it can pass worms around. The fix is boring: pick up poop right away and keep the cat's litter box out of reach.

Why it happens

To a puppy, poop smells interesting, and some of it (the cat's especially) smells like food. It's a habit, not a sign he's missing something in his diet.

Which door?

  • WATCHGross, common, and most outgrow it. Pick up right away and block the litter box.

Usually normal

  • Eating his own poop or the cat's, in a puppy who's otherwise well

When to call

Tick what fits and see which door you're at.

Tick anything you're seeing

Your door: WATCHWATCH

Nothing ticked and he's bright, playful, eating and drinking? Keep an eye on him, jot down what you see, and call in the daytime if it doesn't settle.

Under 16 weeks, a toy breed, or not done with his shots? Move everything one door closer to GO NOW.

Not sure which door you're at? That's a call. Call your vet.
